Seagate is claiming it has the world's most powerful hard drive. But it's not the drive's 15,000 revolutions per minute that is impressing data center managers and server manufacturers.
It's the drive's small size and minimal power consumption that has data centers taking notice. It's the world's first 2.5in drive to reach the above mentioned spin rate. It could conceivably allow data centers to put a full RAID 5 in 1u of space.
The new drive comes in 36 and 73Gb versions and reportedly uses 30% less power than it's 15k counterparts.
Innovations like Seagate's will allow data center to do more with the space they have. Although this will increase cabinet density and kilowatt demand pure cabinet, it will alleviate the need for costly data center redesigns or build-out of new facilities to cope with demanding enterprise applications, such as customer-relationship management (CRM) and enterprise-resource planning (ERP) systems.
