When our network was first set up one of the first things the company did was make sure that there was a good http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_Technology_Infrastructure_Library>ITIL in place. This wasn’t an issue however since they hired one of the best IT managers I’ve ever seen. The company was really focused on giving great IT service and wanted to make sure that all the business software applications they had planned on running, ran smooth with as few problems as possible.

The natural choice here was database automation. Having parts of the network automated allowed the company to focus its monetary recourses on other departments since with automation there’s no need to bring people on board to create patches. I’ve watched a number of companies and their IT people look to improve application availability but they never look at network automation, at least not seriously. One of these companies is no longer in existence which should show us all something. When you start up a network start right and include some degree of automation, you’ll be glad you did
