As Green Grows, Dell increases involvement

Dell announced a plan on Wednesday in which the company plans to go carbon neutral by 2008.  Google has pledged to do the same by the end of 2007.

Going Green won't effect Tech Oriented Companies

AMD responded to questions regarding how the release of their newest processors might affect overall sales saying that they don't expect sales to be affected.  Their reasoning? Companies have already exceeded their processing and storage capacities.  Thus, new IT developments like increased processor abilities and virtualization are addressing an increased demand that is not expected to level off, and certainly not decrease.

Government vows to reduce power consumption in Data Centers

Interesting article that could be indicative of how the government will work with entities like the Green Grid in order to regulate and reduce data center power consumption.  The government has pledged to decrease energy consumption in data centers by 10% by 2011.

Data Center Efficiencies

We've been covering virtualization extensively lately.  This is partly due to a surge of interest across a range of companies from huge data center collocation facilities, massive corporate operations and even the small companies looking for ways to address their growing data centers.  Another particular interest in virtualization stems from the public acknowledgement and interest in the technology fueled by significant IPO's from VMW and other publicly traded companies adopting the technology for the purposes of going green and ultimately minimizing financial impacts due to increasing power costs, expanding physical data centers and other implications mentioned by the Uptime Institute in their paper earlier this year on The Economic Meltdown of Moore's Law.

The interest in virtualization for Data Center Manager's really comes down to efficiencies.  How can a data center be made more efficient?  There is a great article entitled 6 ways to a more Efficient Data Center. It goes thru the process of data center revamping.

Cisco teams up with VMW

Cisco recently announced that its VFrame will host virtualization capabilities via VMware in response to a strong customer interest in the product. 

Cisco's long term goal is to establish the network as the logic housing to incorporate and manage data center resources.

The reemergence of Thin Computers

As Data Centers increase their utilization of virtual applications, we may also be seeing a reemergence of "thin computers" as a compliment to this technology.

A primary motivation behind this emerging trend would be financial implications in terms of customer support as well as power savings.

How green is green?

Digital Realty Trust had a great webinar this morning regarding Data Centers.  Although it's not yet posted in their archives I hope it will be as there is some very interesting information regarding Data Centers and the recent Green movement in the industry.  Topics included: reasons behind the movement, standards in the industry, those participating in the movement and other implications that this movement may influence.

Be sure to check it out .  Of particular interest was a project that Digital Realty Trust for which they will soon earn a LEED gold rating. 

IBM stores data on an atom

In a revolutionary discovery IBM Corp. announced they have discoved how to perform certain computer functions on single atoms and molecules.

This discovery could eventually lead to processors the size of a speck of dust, the company said. Again, technology advancements such as these will lead to data center revolutions that could one day affect data centers world wide.
