IBM has launched a company initiative in which Universities are, in essence, providing state of the art research and experimentation to address company standards and goals.
In a recent launch IBM has joined forces with Ohio State University and Georgia Tech with the goal of automating aspects of virtual cloud computing. The goal is to address an initiative IBM introduced last year to provide "a company-wide cloud computing... across its server, software, services, and R&D units"
The big goal of the research is AUTOMATION. With the frequency of changes expected to quickly escalate, IBM is exploring how to expand the capabilities of cloud computing.
As IBM noted the practical application lies in the fact that companies "are expressing interest in cloud computing because they enable them to set up and modify environments in more aggressive manners to meet business demand". Research into automation will assist in accomplishing these goals.
Likewise, with heating and cooling costs rocketing with no sign of relief in the near future, the next generation of server's will undoubtedly address the issue of how to do more with less. Translating to, how to more efficiently utilize Data Center space.
Research will also address power and cooling in virtual data centers and cloud computing environments.
