Cool times in the Hot Data Center

I came across two recent papers regarding maximizing cooling in current facilities as well as planning for new facilities.

Many data center managers are experimenting with ways to minimize current power costs in terms of virtualization. However, that is only one piece of the puzzle. A second piece is arranging operations to decrease costs. Both articles are a good reference as you attempt to reorganize operations to meet your internal green standards and minimize costs.

Data Center Space - How to get the most out of your data center

It is well known throughout the data center industry that space in a data center is at a premium.

Data Center managers require more and more space.

However, new builds can be expensive and require a good deal of time to implement. So, while data centers continue to be built, as important to the management of Data Centers is fully utilizing the current operations.

Thus, here is an interesting article on Data Center Journal regarding utilizing space in the data center.

An important step in maximizing space and power utilization for the most efficient operations is, as noted in the article, removing equipment that is not being used or meeting a valid organizational need.

 

 

Regardless of new data center builds, efficiency will continue to be a topic of importance for data centers globally.

 

Virtualization

Interesting post here, on VMware's virtualization in terms of current functions and competing future advantages with companies such as Microsoft.

There's no doubt that virtualization will be an increasing important component to the Data Center environment, the question is really who will end up leading the race.

As this technology evolves the need for professionals able to harness and apply those capabilities will be the next challenge for companies to face. Which leads to my second link for this post, "What does it take to manage virtual servers".
