BOYD proves worthy endevor by Sun

Very interesting blog posting by Sun addressing their company initiative to remove orphaned equipment across their campus. 

The company was looking to identify and remove comatose equipment from their operations.  A similar initiative shared by Data Center companies worldwide.

The results included 4100 orphaned servers, of which 64% were still being powered.

Undoubtedly Sun was able to improve their operational efficiency via this initiative and will undoubtedly see a financial return on their efforts.

This article also discusses their initiative regarding shutting down unused air conditioners within their operations and the savings they were able to achieve via that initiative.

Data Center Pulse calls for common SNMP communication to monitor all layers of the power delivery system, connecting building management and IT systems.

I mentioned Data Center Pulse a few weeks ago and discussed the group's initiative to establish common functionality requirements from Data Center vendors.

There is a summation of 10 functionality requirements from IT knowledge Exchange. One of which focuses on establishing an industry wide communication tool to monitor all layers of the power delivery system, connecting building management and IT systems. 

SearchDataCenter.com released a recent article entitled "Users demand SNMP standard-based monitoring for data center power and cooling equipment ".

Data Center Pulse aims to stream line Data Center vendors to incorporate SNMP into their product offerings.  This is just one piece of their overall goal, meant to establish a standard within Data Centers and amongst vendors.

Data Center Dynamics In Washington DC - April 21st

Server Technology Switched POPS - Per Outlet Power Sensing pdu

Blade servers and high density computing power requirements continue to increase, creating heat proliferation and more challenges for managing the IT environment. To maintain their competitive advantage, data center managers need solutions that monitor, track and manage servers and IT equipment and the equipment cabinet infrastructure that houses them.

The Sentry POPS Switched units include 3 pdu options: Single Phase POPS Switched CDU CWG-16V(C13/C19), 3 Phase POPS Switched CDU CWG-24VD/VY(C13/C19)-3Ph, 400 Volt POPS Switched CDU CWG-24V4(C13/C19)-3Ph. All units are mixed outlet Cabinet Power Distribution Unit with network and serial-based power management and alerting capabilities of the Switched Cabinet PDU plus the ability to monitor:

Apparent Power(VA)
Crest Factor and
Power Factor

Utilizing our grouping feature, power information is available per device (multiple outlets), groups of devices (applications), individual Cabinet PDU, cabinet, rows of cabinets or the whole Data Center Floor. Combine the Sentry POPS Switched Cabinet PDU with the Sentry Power Manager (SPM) software tool to cluster outlets and gain power usage information across multiple Cabinet PDU's individual IP address.

The Sentry Power Manager (SPM) provides power distribution unit power (kW and kW-h) monitoring and environmental monitoring across all Sentry CDU's within the network.  Reboot a single or dual-power supply server with one command.  Receive email alerts when power or environmental conditions exceed thresholds.  Assign users specific access rights to designated outlets or groups.  Only the Sentry Power Manager is capable of regulating all Sentry Cabinet PDU's across the network while providing power readings and management at an outlet level in conjunction with the POPS units.
