Surprise!

John Dix at Network World has an interesting piece on what is really happening in organizations that are becoming virtualized. One sentence in particular stood out to me, "What's more, even as companies have strived to reduce the number of applications they manage, 52% of the respondents report application counts growing. Only 10% report declines, while 31% are treading water." We implement more applications over time for one reason only: We need them.

It is great to attempt to limit your application count, as each one requires administative knowledge, user knowledge, vendor contact, etc...; but in any growing organization, needs change and existing applications just don't always cut it. When you need a job done, you need the application that meets your goals best. Sometimes we can forget this - leading to long-term headaches.

Virtualization

Interesting post here, on VMware's virtualization in terms of current functions and competing future advantages with companies such as Microsoft.

There's no doubt that virtualization will be an increasing important component to the Data Center environment, the question is really who will end up leading the race.

As this technology evolves the need for professionals able to harness and apply those capabilities will be the next challenge for companies to face. Which leads to my second link for this post, "What does it take to manage virtual servers".

Citrix announced that it is planning a virtual desktop for release in 2008.

VMW posted earnings of 18 cents a share following the first quarter of their IPO.
